16 December 2011 - DSE Position Paper on Collective Redress

On 16 December 2011, DSE published its position paper on Collective Redress. While DSE supports the broad aim of the European Institutions to ensure effective redress for consumers in the European Single Market, DSE prefers to wait to establish the functioning of existing instruments and make adjustments on national level, if necessary. For DSE, a European collective redress mechanism is not a solution to ensure consumer protection but, should this system be introduced nonetheless, appropriate safeguards are necessary to prevent misuse of the system and accelerate litigation.

DSE would like to congratulate Switzerland-based direct selling company Lux International Group which posted its most impressive year ever in terms of growth in 2010. At the annual corporate press conference, CEO and President of the Board Reto von der Becke attributed the recent success to growth in every market in which it operates, noting the Europe and the Asia Pacific regions as those having the largest impact.

16 August 2011 - Commission improves access to information on unfair commercial practices via an online database

The Commission launched an online database https://webgate.ec.europa.eu/ucp/ to make legal data on unfair commercial practices publicly available. Directive 2005/29/EC on Unfair Commercial Practices lays down harmonised rules for the fight against unfair commercial practices and contributes to a high level of consumer protection.

30 June 2011 - Proposal for a Directive on consumer rights final text accomplished

Since the publication of the proposed Consumer Rights Directive by the European Commission in October 2008, DSE has underlined that it supports the objective of any European consumer policy to stimulate the functioning (the transfer of goods and services) of the Internal Market of the 27 Member States as well as to create a fair balance between the interests of consumers and enterprises.

Austrian Direct Selling Association Handelsverband joins DSE

Handelsverband, the Austrian Retail Association represents the direct selling, stationary retail and distance selling industry in Austria. We formally joined DSE on 11 December 2010.  The leading direct sellers active in Austria joined Handelsverband in 1985. It is a non-profit association. Members of the Austrian DSA are: AMC, Donauland, ENJO, Jafra, Lux, Party-Lite, Pierre-Lang, Tupperware, Verlagsservice and Vorwerk.

Italian Direct Selling Association UNIVENDITA joins DSE

UNIVENDITA, the new Italian Direct Selling Association (founded in September 2010) formally joined DSE on 8 November 2010. UNIVENDITA is the non-profit association representing the interests of the sustainable and ethical direct selling industry in Italy. UNIVENDITA Members are CartOrange Srl, Jafra Cosmetics Spa, Just Italia Spa, Tupperware Italia Spa, Vorwerk Contempora Spa and Vorwerk Foletto Spa.

18 October 2010 - Direct Selling Responsible for Low Percentage of Consumer Complaints, ECC Study Finds

According to data released by the European Commission’s Consumer Centres’ Network (ECC-Net), distance selling is responsible for only ten percent of all complaints handled by the ECC each year and doorstep selling for even less at just over one percent. The ECC-Net handles over sixty thousand consumer complaints and attempts to assist consumers with cross-border transactions.
