Tuesday, 14 April, 2015

On 10-04-2015, WIV Wein International AG reached an agreement with Majestic Wine PLC, a publically listed and Britain’s largest wine merchants, about the sale of its holding in the online wine retailer Naked Wines International Limited – subject to all necessary regulatory approvals.

In 2009, WIV Wein International AG acquired a major share in the start-up company Naked Wines (www.nakedwines.com) and established the basis for its successful growth in the UK and further expansion in Australia and the United States. In the meantime, more than 300,000 “Angels” are investing in more than 130 winemakers in 14 countries in the United Kingdom, the United States and Australia. In the past year, Naked Wines generated a turnover of £ 74 million.

“WIV have been great partners in building Naked Wines from an idea into a substantial business. We appreciate their support and commitment and wish them well for the future”, underlines Rowan Gormley (CEO Naked Wines).  Naked Wines will continue to be managed in the future as an independent company by the previous management, under the leadership of Rowan Gormley. At the same time, Rowan Gormley will move up with immediate effect to become a member of the Board of Directors of the Majestic Wine Group and will be appointed as the new Chairman of the Board and CEO.

"Naked Wines is by far the world's most successful online wine trading company. We have accompanied and supported the development and expansion phase enthusiastically. For our continued growth, we have looked for a powerful investor who - besides having financial strength - can also contribute to our growth potential through the development of versatile synergies. We are pleased that we have found an investor with Majestic Wines, who also sees the opportunities of the business model in the same way as we do and will ensure the further expansion of the young company", says Andres Ruff, Chief Executive Officer of WIV Wein International Ltd. "With the sales proceeds, we will be able to finance future investments in our other divisions and ensure the independence of this family-owned business", Ruff continued.

WIV Wein International AG (www.wiv-ag.com) with headquarters in Burg Layen near Bingen am Rhein is the world's leading company for the sale of wine to the consumer. In addition to direct sales, the unlisted family-owned company is active in the online, wholesale and retail trade, exhibition stand construction, as well as in the field of logistics.
